In Deuce’s world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed ‘brat’ has trained into one of three groups–Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.

As a Huntress, her purpose is clear—to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce’s troubles are just beginning.

Down below, deviation from the rules is punished swiftly and harshly, and Fade doesn’t like following orders. At first she thinks he’s crazy, but as death stalks their sanctuary, and it becomes clear the elders don’t always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be telling the truth. Her partner confuses her; she’s never known a boy like him before, as prone to touching her gently as using his knives with feral grace.

As Deuce’s perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy, but the elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster, the enclave puts their faith in strictures and sacrifice instead. No matter how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she’s ever known.

Book Review

Christ on a bike, this book was so damn difficult for me to rate & review. After a month-long on-and-off-again reading relationship with Enclave, I was left with such muddled feelings that I was kicking myself for not jotting down some notes to later help me decipher my tangled opinions. And then I had a light bulb moment and came up with a way to organize & summarize my thoughts: an emoticon flowchart. BAM!

I will say upfront that I found myself disappointed with Enclave. While reading, I kept waiting for the book to rock my world & blow my socks off, but my world remained perfectly grounded & my socks stayed firmly on my feet. That's not to say that I thought everything about the book was bad, but there were definitely quite a lot of shortcomings.

Let's start with a rundown of Enclave's positive attributes.

Firstly, I liked how descriptive the writing was. It helped get me more engaged in the story and allowed me to better understand & appreciate the differences between our world and the one Deuce was born into. Secondly, there was lots of action—gory, violent action—which totally appealed to my inner action junkie.

Plus, Deuce was a fairly kickass heroine. Girl had some serious lady balls. Furthermore, I enjoyed how she gradually started to open up to new ideas and different ways of thinking & feeling, and I liked that this didn't come easily to her or happen overnight.

I also liked Fade (at least for the first half of the book). Fade, like Deuce, was a hardcore badass, but he had a soft, gentle, caring side. He had a quiet but strong presence about him (initially). And I was wholeheartedly rooting for his budding romance with Deuce, which started off hesitantly, turned sweet, took a brief detour into sexy town and then...hit the breaks so damn hard I got whiplash.

This segues me into my problems with the book.

At times, Enclave was a total tease. Not in the neener-neener sort of way, but the kind in which it got me all excited and then left me unsatisfied & frustrated. Fade, for example, was shaping up to be a contender for Swoon-Worthy Fictional Boyfriend of the Year, and then he basically faded into the background and morphed into a wet blanket. Same goes for his romance with Deuce. Just as their bond began to skirt love territory, a completely contrived, nonsensical and VERY disturbing/disgusting love triangle was forcibly injected into the story (Note to authors: a sociopath/abuser/rapist should NEVER EVER under any circumstances be used as a contender for the heroine's heart. Not cool. And if you can't handle serious subjects like abuse & rape in a responsible manner, then don't write about them at all.)

Anyways, another tease moment came in the first half of the book when it was revealed that there's a rebel group within the enclave as well as a conspiracy involving innocent citizens being framed & punished for crimes they didn't commit. Right away I got excited thinking that Deuce & Fade would join the rebels and play some kind of role in fighting & exposing the corrupt officials, but nothing of the sort even came close to happening. Both intriguing concepts were discarded almost immediately after being introduced. This occurred again & again with other ideas & plot points (murder in the enclave, smarter freaks, topside gangs, etc.)

I found the last third of the book to be rather boring. It felt like filler with not much substance. To spice things up, a bit of melodrama & angst was thrown in towards the end, but it had absolutely no emotional impact on me whatsoever...zero, zilch.

As for the ending, well, my reaction to it can be summed up thusly: WTF? #$%^@#*!! For a second there, I seriously thought my copy of the book was missing pages. I can't remember the last time I came across such a haphazard cliffhanger. Describing it as anticlimactic would be a gross understatement.

Thanks for the review. I've seen Enclave around. I've heard good and bad things about it. I hope you like the sequel better.

Love the flow chart! I'll admit, I really liked 'Enclave', but it does almost read like two different books.

Marcie - I'm really hoping the sequel is better because I see a great deal of potential in this series.

Brooke - My main criticism of the book is that I felt as though Aguirre tried to do too much all at once. She threw a lot of stuff in that was left undeveloped & tangling like loose threads, making the overall plot feel rather flimsy & rushed.

Hmm, though I haven't read that many reviews of this novel, they've all been good. I'm glad to be forewarned before I read it. I love your flowchart!! Great way to show how you liked and disliked the book!

Buried In Books - I'll be first to admit that I can be a bit nitpicky and that I sometimes over-analyze/dissect the books I'm reading instead of just sitting back & enjoying the ride. I think part of the problem in this case was that I had pretty high expectations of Enclave given all of the stellar reviews.

This one sounds like you were pushed off a cliff rather than left hanging. That's too bad. It sounds like a great concept, but it's sad when the execution isn't there.

I am SO with you on this one. SO. WITH. YOU. *headdesk*

Okay, to be fair, the plot never grabbed me in the first place ... I only gave in and bought it because people wouldn't stop telling me how *OMGWTFBBQAMAZING?!* it was ... PEER PRESSURE, YOU SUCK!! :o

It started off okay enough, even though I was a little confused over the naming ceremony, since it implied that the mostly-not-super-literate people living in the Enclave could speak French (Two > Deux > Deuce > ??) ... and there was some cool fighting, although I wasn't exactly on the edge of my seat wondering whether Deuce, Huntress Extraordinaire and Fade would survive ... but then every thing just kind of stagnated, LOL.

Also, you're so right about stuff coming up and then being discarded immediately, just like that ... pointless, much?! I'm convinced that the story would have worked so much better had Deuce and Fade remained in their Enclave and focused on helping the rebels in bringing down the corrupt leaders. Then again, almost everyone else (inexplicably) seems to LOVE this story. I don't get it, though. *shrug*

I'm currently at the part where they hole up eating tinned cherries and am not feeling too enthusiastic about continuing on, especially since I see that I only have love triangles, deus ex machina plot devices, angst and cliffhangers to look forward to. Fun times. Say no to peer pressure.

Alison - You hit the nail on the head. That's what had me torn about this book. There were several rather fascinating & entertaining ideas/concepts that I really liked, but the execution was rather shabby.

Bella - Chica, I think we're totally on the same wavelength. I'll be completely honest, my gut reaction was to give this book a 2/5 rating, but I saw potential in it...potential that was wasted in this book but has me holding onto the hope that it will be more fully developed & used in the sequel. Plus, I think I talked myself into enjoying the story more than I actually did.

I don't know. It's definitely not the superstar everyone has made it out to be. Speaking of which, don't feel bad; I totally succumbed to the peer pressure too. Now, I'm giving my copy of Divergent the stink eye...'cos I have a feeling it will be another letdown. Damn you, hype machine!!

P.S. LOLs at the French reference...I totally didn't even think about that.

I have heard so many mixed feelings about this book. I was on the fence, but I'm not sure I want to read it anymore. I have it when a book sets you up for something exciting and then doesn't satisfy. Thanks for the great review!

Lol I love how you did the whole emotion chart. I don't think this book would be for me because I really don't like horror and I feel this book would have a fair amount of it. Thanks for the great review though, I'm sorry you were left feeling disappointed.

I love the flowchart, it tells exactly what I thought about this book. I've read the books few weeks ago but still can't figure out how to write my review which is unusual for me. This book give me a hard time organizing my thoughts.

Penelope Lolohea - I definitely wouldn't recommend to rush out and buy it, but I still think Enclave might be worth giving a try if you can borrow from somewhere/someone. Lot's of people have apparently enjoyed it; so ya never know.

Alexa - Hmm, well I personally wouldn't refer to the somewhat gory aspects of the book as 'horror'...the Freaks aren't even that explicitly described. Actually, I didn't find them scary at all.

blackplume - I hear ya. I almost gave up on writing the review. I can't remember the last time it took me so long to write down my thoughts/opinions.

Yeah I know what you guys mean. I expected the romance aspect of this book to be much more. I was also hoping Fade and Deuce would get farther into their relationship, but right when Stalker joined their group the whole Deuce-Fade relationship just poofed into dust and I was left disappointed. It was also a very abrupt ending to the enclave. She simply got the news in a dream, which I thought was very lame. The author (Ann I believe) should have gone much farther into the more intelligent freaks and the rebellion. I was left thinking "ok then...the whole enclave just suddenly got taken out of the book without a big clash going on or anything..." Overall, I would give the book a 3/5, the beginning would get a 4/5 and the last part would get a 2/5 at most.

Having a serial rapist enter a love triangle sent me over, I couldn't believe the author did that, especially, since Deuce had befriended a victim of his and he had kidnapped Fade's childhood friend Pearl that had resulted in her death.
